Targeting your market through effective copywriting
The purpose of effective copywriting is to communicate the right words to the right people. Although there are many copywriters, especially on the Internet, who claim that they can sell paintings to visually impaired (although nothing odd in that) you have to thoroughly know your market, your target audience, before you can come up with a result oriented copy.
To indulge in effective copywriting first fully grasp the essence of the product or service you are planning to promote through your copywriting. If you are a professional copywriter like I am, frankly this is not possible if you are working on multiple projects in a single week. So how to become comfortable with the product or the service. Lots of material is available on the Internet. Quickly search on Google or on any favorite search engine of yours and glean as much matter as your time allows. This will give you an idea of what is being written and how that product or service is being promoted and copy written about. Poor copywriting (yes, yes, this is not a typo) will feed you with plenty of ideas that you can implement to write copy from your own perspective.
In case the product is totally new and not much information exists on the Internet you can simply ask the client and the client will understand. In fact the client will appreciate your effort because every person loves to talk about his or her product especially when people are eager to listen to him or her. Take down notes using pen and paper because this really clarifies concepts.
Once you have understood the product you know how it can benefit the readers and when it comes to effective copywriting, it is only the benefits that really make an impact. Once you know the product you will know whom to target.
Targeting is very important because as a copywriter if you have no idea home to target you will just be shooting arrows in the dark and your words will mean nothing. As an effective copywriter you should be talking directly to your readers. So if you don’t know to whom you are talking how are you going to talk effectively?
Make a list of the greatest benefits your product or service can offer and then think about the target market accordingly. Who would like to avail these great benefits? Once you know this you will be able to write a great copy for your target market.
